Common questions

Plain-English answers. Always consult your tax advisor for specifics.

What is an HSA, exactly?

A Health Savings Account is a triple-tax-advantaged account you can contribute to if you have a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). Contributions are tax-deductible, growth is tax-free, and qualified medical withdrawals are tax-free too. No other account offers all three.

Why should I pay medical bills out of pocket?

Because there's no deadline on HSA reimbursements. If you pay $500 today out of pocket, keep the receipt, and let that $500 grow tax-free in your HSA for 20 years — at 7% growth it becomes $1,900. When you pull it out later, it's still tax-free. You've essentially turned medical expenses into retirement savings.

Do I need to reimburse myself right away?

No — this is the key insight. The IRS places no time limit on HSA reimbursements, as long as the expense occurred after your HSA was established and you have documentation. Save receipts now, cash out decades later.

What's a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)?

It's a note from your doctor saying a specific expense is being used to treat a specific medical condition. For borderline items like gym memberships, massage therapy, or vitamins, a LMN turns them from "not eligible" into "eligible." Your doctor can usually write one during a regular visit.

Is Reimbursable really free?

Yes. Unlimited manual expense tracking, the HSA calculator, and the eligibility directory are free forever — no caps. Premium ($5/mo or $50/yr) adds AI receipt scanning, bank connections, and email receipt forwarding. If you only need year-end Form 8889 once, there's a $10 one-time tax bundle. See full pricing →

What expenses count as HSA-eligible?

The IRS defines eligible expenses in Publication 502. In general, any expense for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease qualifies. This includes doctor visits, prescriptions, dental and vision care, mental health services, and hundreds of OTC items. Use the search above to check any specific item.
